Chemical Peel in Tampa

What Is a Chemical Peel?

The name may sound intimidating, but a chemical peel is a comfortable and safe way to rejuvenate your skin. Over time, the outer layer of skin can become damaged and begin looking aged. However, the good news is that beneath that layer is new skin waiting to shine. At the Lombardi Institute of Dermatology, we provide professional chemical peels in a comfortable environment.

How Does a Chemical Peel Work?

A controlled peel can be extremely beneficial to the appearance of the skin. Though our skin naturally replenishes itself, the top layer can remain damaged or uneven. There are multiple ways to address this top layer, but one of the most effective is a chemical peel.

Our office uses safe and gentle chemical peels to minimize the appearance of sun damage through the removal of dead and damaged cells.

For more than a century, skincare professionals have been performing chemical peels. It is a constantly evolving treatment designed to produce controlled exfoliation of the top layer of skin cells. However, there is an added benefit of a chemical peel compared to regular physical exfoliation.

Peels also carry the benefit of promoting the production of elastin and collagen, two ingredients that are vital to the supportive structure beneath the skin.

Treatments with Chemical Peels

There are many types of chemical peels, allowing dermatologists to use them to treat a wide variety of medical and cosmetic dermatology concerns. Some of the conditions that improve with chemical peel treatment include:

  • Enlarged pores
  • Sunspots
  • Fine lines
  • Freckles

In some patients with acne, gentle chemical peels are used to promote healing and minimize scarring. During your consultation, Dr. Lombardi will provide complete information about what treatments may best help you meet your goals. Chemical peels can often be used in combination with other treatments to provide a complete rejuvenation experience.

Types of Chemical Peels

One of the greatest aspects of chemical peel treatment is our ability to customize care to the individual. We understand that every patient’s skin is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Some patients may benefit from a lighter peel, while others might see the best results from a stronger peel.

Lighter Peels

Light peels may involve the application of more mild substances, including:

  • Fruit enzymes
  • Lactic acid
  • Alpha hydroxy acid
  • Glycolic acid

Each of these ingredients in a light peel is very mild and gentle on the skin. Due to the low strength of ingredients, a lighter peel will produce less dramatic results. However, this method requires no downtime and is highly comfortable for patients. If you have more sensitive skin, then this may be an excellent option for you.

Stronger Peels

Stronger chemical peels may be suited to men and women with extensive sun damage or wrinkling they wish to correct. The increased strength of ingredients such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA) reaches deeper layers of skin, and it will produce a greater extent of peeling. As such, the deeper peel may require a few days of “downtime” away from the sunlight. There should be almost no discomfort during this time, but your skin will still be sensitive. As old, damaged cells detach from the surface, the skin will reveal a healthy glow.

Customized Peels

For some patients, a combination of peels might be what you need. We are always ready to work with you to develop the perfect peel for your needs and goals. A customized chemical peel can help you achieve the skin you want, your way. Care is designed around your specific needs after a thorough consultation and skin assessment.

How Long Do Chemical Peel Results Last

After treatment, you will notice an immediate improvement in the appearance and texture of your skin. Our patients report enjoying renewed vibrancy and smooth texture that lasts for weeks.

Depending on the type of chemical peel you receive, you can enjoy gorgeous results weeks to come. Factors that influence your results include:

  • Type of chemical peel
  • How often you have peel treatments
  • Condition of your skin

Chemical peels are also effective in treating scarring and promote healing on your skin. After treatment, our patients enjoy a more even skin tone, tighter skin, and a more youthful appearance. Before you undergo your treatment, Dr. Lombardi will provide you with a good idea of what your results should look like.
